Seeing is Believing: Explore Cizhou Kiln
Apr 10,2023 Great Wall New Media

The Cizhou Kiln system used to be the biggest among the civil kilns in northern China in the ancient times. Its firing techniques and craftsmanship have been inscribed into the nationally most representative intangible cultural heritage list. The Cizhou Kiln products are a comprehensive expression of not only all the achievements of the decorative porcelain of the Song (960-1279) and Jin (1115-1234) dynasties but also a breakthrough in the limits of the five major imperial kilns in the Song Dynasty. They have won a resounding widespread reputation at home and abroad for their strong cultural breadth and embeddedness, rich local colors, distinct national features, and a far-reaching worldwide influence.

The "Mantou Kiln", "Ni Chi" and "Gu Jing" and other existing kiln ruins all have their own stories to tell. The white-glazed brown color basin with fish and algae motifs, the white-glazed black color lady's pillow, the white-glazed brown color vase with four tie-holes and inscriptions…all these have fully revealed the beauty of white-black pottery arts. There has even emerged in the commercial streets in the Town of Pengcheng in the Handan Fengfeng Mining District a porcelain trade culture, covering folk culture, oral literature, and kiln and studio architectural art all centering round the traditional firing techniques and craftsmanship.

The flame of the Cizhou kiln is raging and the techniques and craftsmanship will pass on. How was it that Cizhou Kiln was out there to get its name so well-known at home and abroad? Why is it that veteran intangible heritage successors have burst with renewed energy? With these queries in mind, let's get hold of Mr. Adrian Young, an overseas communication officer for "english.hebei.com.cn", who is on a tour of the town at the invitation of his friend Yue Kun to get a personal experience of the pottery-making fun, and follow him to get a closeup view of the ancient pottery-firing technique and craftsmanship.
