Farmers in Jingxian county of Hengshui, Hebei province, about 250 kilometers south of Beijing, have been busy harvesting their millet crop planted on more than 600 hectares.
Liu Shulin, a grower in Houliumingfu town, planted the millet on 40 hectares this year.
"The millet is growing well this year because there is abundant rain," Liu said, adding that he hopes to harvest 350 kilograms of millet per mu and earn about 1,700 yuan ($245).
He said he would increase the areas planted next year.
According to Li Xin, a senior agronomist at the county's bureau of agriculture and rural affairs, the millet thrives with rain and does not require irrigation.
"Compared with traditional crops such as wheat and corn, millet can save 220 cubic meters per mu on average," he said.
