A doctor practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) will serve time in prison for his role in the deaths of two patients to whom he sold medicine containing high levels of arsenic.
The doctor was convicted of negligent homicide and sentenced to three years in prison with three years of probation at Miyun county court.
Xiang Ying, a press officer with the court, told METRO yesterday the 67-year-old doctor, surnamed Lou, had operated a TCM clinic in Miyun county for 23 years.
Hu Shuguang, an unqualified 22-year-old salesman of TCM products, had supplied cheap medicines to Lou since 2006.
Hu bought the medicine from a Chinese herbal medicine wholesale market in Anguo city, Hebei province, Xiang said.
During April 2009, Wang bought 5 kg of gypsum fibrosum from Hu and, on May 21, sold five doses of medicine containing the gypsum fibrosum to Sun Qide, a 63-year-old man who went to the clinic for treatment of his eczema, Xiang said.
After taking the medicine, Sun suffered from vomiting and diarrhea and was immediately sent to Miyun county hospital for treatment, where he died the same evening. The hospital identified his death as arsenic poisoning.
According to Xiang, the following day, Wang Xiulan, a 63-year-old woman attended Lou's clinic for treatment of a stomach ailment. Lou again sold five doses of medicine that contained the gypsum fibrosum.
That afternoon, after taking the medicine, Wang suffered from the same symptoms as Sun and she died in hospital on May 22 of arsenic poisoning.
After hearing about the two patients' deaths, Lou was suspicious about the gypsum fibrosum, and tested a small dose on himself, said Xiang.
He soon suffered from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and felt faint and was admitted to Huairou hospital on May 22. He recovered after two days of treatment.
Du Juan, the judge of the criminal tribunal at Miyun county court, told METRO yesterday that Lou reached compensation agreements with both families.
Wang paid Sun's family a total of 180,000 yuan and sent Wang's family 210,000 yuan for economic losses. Both families expressed understanding to Lou, Du said.
"Considering Lou's good attitude to his crime and actively compensating the economic losses to the victims' families, the court gave him a lenient sentence," she said.
